Community advocates, Joyce Petrowski and Anita Buckel founded Furnishing Dignity in 2014 because while existing nonprofits could successfully stabilize homeless individuals/families, including youth aging out of foster care, with temporary shelter and case management services, there remained a gap in services.
Furnishing Dignity closes this gap when it comes time for individuals and families to transition to stable housing. Many times, families rarely possess the basic household furnishings needed to make their house functional and a safe, comfortable home environment for all. Typically relying on a small, fixed income, families need to prioritize their expenses for items such as rent, food, childcare, and healthcare. Beds for all family members, kitchen table and chairs, a sofa, and dresser to unpack their lives would have to wait, things many of us take for granted ? until they are gone. Studies have shown that the burden of furnishing a place can lead to instability and vulnerability to return to homelessness.
Furnishing Dignity services are funded entirely through the community and include in-kind donations of gently used home furnishings and financial contributions which help to fund critical program expenses including program supplies, packing materials, staffing, transportation, and storage.
Despite 2020?s unique challenges, Furnishing Dignity proudly welcomed its 700th household ? a young family of nine with children ranging in age from 1 to 13 years, transitioning to their own home after 18+ months in a local shelter.
